Washington Day Seminar Series

Washington Day SeminarNESA Distinguished Adjunct Faculty member Ambassador Craig Dunkerley (ret.) hosts the monthly Washington Seminar for an audience primarily composed of diplomats who focus on political and military affairs. This seminar usually attracts defense attachés, deputy chiefs of mission and political counselors representing NESA-region embassies in Washington. This event is open to all diplomats from countries with a strategic interest in the NESA region. NESA typically invites two guest speakers to discuss issues related to national and regional security.

The Washington Seminar Series is an opportunity for participants to share with a senior U.S. government official their views on controversial and difficult subjects. Discussion at this seminar, as in all NESA sessions, is based on the spirit the Chatham House Rule: "…participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed." The seminar’s purpose is to encourage informal and constructive dialogue among senior national security professionals with disparate backgrounds and perspectives to generate ideas and suggestions for cooperative problem solving.

The expertise of the visiting speaker determines the content of each seminar. Past topics have included "Nuclear nonproliferation in Iran," “The evolution of U.S. policy in Iraq," "Mapping the Global Futures 2020 Project by the National Intelligence Council," and "A Congressional perspective on national security challenges in the NESA region."
